Our new EP entitled "殻・逝・霾・宙 (Shell, Elapse, Haze, Aeon)” is written for Chinese artist Hoho Zhou (周褐褐)’s video work.
I met her during OVUM's China tour in 2018, at a show in Chengdu, the city where she lives. She had studied in Japan, was fluent in Japanese, and was very kind to us. During dinner after the show, she showed me a few of her pieces and they were all really fascinating and immediately intrigued me.
Although we didn't have any special interaction after that, I kept checking her works on social networking sites and secretly hoped to commission her to do artwork for my band someday.
Then, out of the blue, she contacted me and asked me to create music for her video work. There was no reason to refuse.
In the process of composing the music, I naturally engaged in a series of dialogues with her, which was truly a great learning experience for me. I felt a deep resonance with her in terms of her attitude toward expression and the way she perceives things, and my respect for her was solidified.
At first glance, her expressions may seem dark and a bit scary. However, I feel that it is the positive energy that is always contained in them and that’s what attracts me.
She has a very clear vision of her own expression, and I was really surprised that she could verbalize it so well. The most memorable thing she said was: "When we are in the light, we cannot feel the light.”
These words clarified for me how I should perceive her work and what attitude I should take toward this composition.
As the title suggests, the video work consists of four parts, the last of which, "宙 (Aeon)“ was chosen to be used as AMALA's music video. The sculptures that appear in the video are all her works. We hope you enjoy it.
